Growth Potential

Tengah Forest City Transformation

Sprawling over 700ha, the new Tengah estate - which is about the size of Bishan - will not only feature the country's first car-free town centre, it will also allow residents to get up close with nature.  Tengah will be composed of five housing districts: Plantation, Park, Garden, Brickland and Forest Hill, each to be designed to correspond with a facet of the town's identity.

 

For instance, the Plantation District, the first to be built, will have a community farmway running through its housing precincts.  It has space dedicated for community gardening and urban farming, and activities such as sales of organic produce may also be held there.

 

The town sits on a key eco-corridor linking the western part of Singapore to nature reserves in the Central Catchment area.  There will be a 100m-wide, 5km-long Forest Corridor that will form part of the larger network of greenery linking the Western Catchment Area and the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.  A continuous stretch of lush greenery will also run along the town's periphery to complement it.

 

At the heart of the town will lie a new 20ha Central Park, which will include an amphitheatre.  The park will be integrated with water bodies to provide a picturesque space for recreation.

 

In line with the Government's efforts to get people to cut back on using cars, Tengah will house the first car-free HDB town centre, although this will be put into effect only when the town reaches critical mass.

 

Roads and vehicles will run beneath the town centre.

 

Tengah is set to offer more living and recreational options for those working in the 600ha Jurong Innovation District, with its first phase slated for completion around 2022.  The district falls partly within the town's boundaries.

Sungei Kadut Eco-District (SKED)

The Future of Manufacturing, Sungei Kadut, is set for a multimillion-dollar facelift, rejuvenated from the inside out, transforming into an eco-district that embodies the concept of Live, Work and Play!

 

These developments include trendspace for the furniture and furniture-related industries; TimMac for the timber, metal and machinery industries; and Kranji Green for the waste management and recycling industries, which support the environmental technology industry.

 

Besides supporting the transformation of manufacturing, the 500ha SKED will be designed to welcome new growth industries such as agri-tech to seize new economic opportunities.  About 18ha of land has been set aside for the first phase of development for the Agri-Food Innovation Park (AFIP) in the district to co-locate R&D, prototyping and high-tech farming operations such as indoor farming and aquaculture hatcheries.  This will generate new jobs such as systems engineers, plant scientists, and aquaculture nutritionists, as well as enable innovation and discovery of synergies with the co-location of agri-tech activities.  Another new growth industry to be housed in SKED is environmental technology.

 

Similar to next-generation industrial estates like Jurong Innovation District and Punggol Digital District, SKED will be more than just a workplace, it will be an exciting hub for the wider community.  The district will offer retail and recreational options.  New roads and a new train station will be built to improve connectivity around and within SKED, while a mobility corridor for public buses, cyclists and pedestrians will also be built to support the district's car-lite vision.  There will also be a green network connecting waterfront parks and park connectors to wider recreational opportunities such as the Rail Corridor, the Round Island Route and Sungel Buloh Wetland Reserve.
